The Great Run Company co-ordinates two key running events in the Bristol calendar – the Great Bristol 10k and the Great Bristol Half Marathon on 25 September. First staged in 1989 the Great Bristol Half Marathon has become a long-held tradition in the national running calendar. Over 10,000 runners every year make this a must do event with an atmosphere second to none. It shares largely the same route as the 10k, starting and finishing close to Bristol’s historic harbourside. It takes in the stunning Avon Gorge and twice passes under Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge. The Great Bristol 10k sees thousands of runners on the same streets in May.
The build-up to both runs sees thousands of runners training in the parks and open spaces of the city, and both are viewed by huge crowds of family, friends and general well-wishers. Huge amounts of money are raised at both events and the international field competing has climbed in standard over the years.
